A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into force this Wednesday, November 27 in Lebanon, after more than a year of cross-border hostilities et two months of open war between the Israeli army and the armed Lebanese movement supported by Iran.
The truce is intended to halt the conflict that has forced tens of thousands of people in Israel and hundreds of thousands more in Lebanon to flee their homes.
These hostilities led to bombings on Lebanon, causing the death of thousands of peopleand the deployment of Israeli soldiers across the border between the two countries to confront Hezbollah fighters.
US President Joe Biden welcomed the ceasefire agreement, “a new beginning” for Lebanon and “good news” for which the United States and France had been working for weeks.
60 days to gradually establish peace
Israeli army has 60 days to gradually withdraw from Lebanonsaid a senior American official on condition of anonymity. While Hezbollah must also withdraw from the southern border with Israel. All under the surveillance of the Americans and the French.
In the event of friction, the United States and France will ensure that the disputes are resolved. On the ground, however, it is the Lebanese soldiers who will act. There are only 4,000 of them today, soon 1,500 more. And more than 6,000 in the longer term, with means to clear the land and reopen the roads in complete safety.
For this mission, they will need training, weapons, fuel, food… All this partly financed by France with the United States, Italy and other partners. France which also participates in UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (10,000 men in support of the Lebanese forces).
Finally, at the political level, Jean-Yves Le Drian is sent by Emmanuel Macron this Wednesday to Byirut to help with the election of a president of the Lebanese Republic.
