A major fire broke out during the night from Friday to Saturday in an agricultural building on the 10th row in Lyster.
Firefighters from the L’Érable Regional Fire Safety Service (SSIRÉ) were alerted at 1:35 a.m.
“The fire spread to the roof structure of this long building with a length of approximately 400 feet. The roof was affected over the entire surface, but we quickly brought the fire under control,” said the director of SSIRÉ, Éric Boucher.
If the damage to the roof is significant, of the order of a few hundred thousand dollars, according to the officer, on the other hand, by quickly controlling the situation, the firefighters avoided losses of several million dollars for this agricultural producer.
“It’s one of the largest farms in Lyster,” noted Éric Boucher. Some 400 dairy cows were in the building. None died. They were all taken out. »
The animals will be taken to other producers.
At the height of the fire, more than 35 firefighters were mobilized. Firefighters from Dosquet and Sainte-Agathe-de-Lotbinière joined the firefighters from different SSIRÉ barracks in mutual aid.
At lunchtime on Saturday, the intervention was still continuing. Firefighters were looking for hot spots. A basket is used to allow sappers to work on removing pieces of sheet metal.
Research work will have to be carried out surrounding the causes and circumstances of the fire. But an electrical fault in a motor could be to blame.
