Alcohol is one of the drinks that turns out to be particularly high in calories without you realizing it, but some types of alcohol are even worse than others. This is the case of this very popular alcohol which is often consumed on terraces during spring-summer, and which we are not sufficiently wary of.

When it comes to nutrition and weight loss, we talk a lot about sodas and fruit juices as drinks that are very unhealthy and too high in sugar to be consumed regularly. Certainly, these drinks contain unsuspected “liquid” calories and significant quantities of sugar, but this is also the case foralcohol that we consume in a light spirit on the terrace in the summer months. However, having a drink in the evening can quickly increase your sugar intake and your calorie intake. “Liquid” calories which have the big drawback of not even filling us up!

This is especially the case when you drink beer according to dietitian Alexandra Murcier, interviewed by Madame Le Figaro. While we happily consume it in large quantities by ordering a pint in a café, we too often forget that when we drink such an oversized glass, this alcohol becomes much more caloric than others. Beer is notably much more caloric than a glass of wine in these cases. “A pint of beer (50 cl) represents double that of a glass of red wine in terms of calorie intake”, specifies, in fact, the expert.

Why does drinking beer make us gain weight more than drinking wine?

To explain why having the habit of drinking beer tends to make us gain weight more than drinking beer, Alexandra Murcier already points out that a glass of red wine represents on average around a hundred calories, while a glass of white wine contains a little more (even if this ultimately remains negligible according to her).

By preferring a pint of beer to a glass of wine, the dietitian suggests that you consume around 200 calories by having just one glass of alcohol. A big difference compared to wine. The dietitian points out that all beers contain significant amounts of sugar. Allow on average 20 grams of sugar for a pint of white beer, 25 grams of sugar for a pint of pale beer and around 35g of sugar if you choose a dark beer.

Beer: how to choose the lowest calorie possible?

“Generally speaking, the higher the alcohol content of a beer, the sweeter it will be.”, specifies the dietitian. As you will have understood, this amount of sugar will impact the number of calories you will drink, so by monitoring the alcohol content of your beer, you can reduce your caloric intake a little.

And if you’re thinking of turning to alcohol-free beer, then remember that not all alcohol-free beers are created equal. Indeed, after sifting through the composition of several alcohol-free beers, we noticed that flavored alcohol-free beers are not always drastically lower in calories than beers containing alcohol, because manufacturers add syrups and sweetening agents which make them almost as caloric as classic beer.
