In 1986, Diego Maradona was at the top of his game. He won the World Cup with Argentina and won the France Football Adidas Ballon d’Or for the best player in the competition. This individual title will then have an incredible story. Three years after being given to the Pibe de Oro, the trophy was stolen during a bank robbery in October 1989 in Naples. When we thought it had disappeared forever, it reappeared in 2016 during an auction in Paris. Abdelhamid B., who won the lot with Diego Maradona’s Ballon d’Or, put the property up for auction. Hearing the news, Diego Maradona’s heirs opposed this sale. After being rejected by the Nanterre court last week, the Argentines this time won their case.

On appeal before the Versailles court, they obtained the sequestration and a ban on the sale of the Ballon d’Or. The auction is therefore canceled and justice will keep the trophy until the Central Office for the Fight against Trafficking in Cultural Property (OCBC) completes its investigation. The series is not over, however. To recover the trophy, the heirs of the Argentinian legend will initiate a claim action before the judicial court.
