A unique long-pitch competition in the world, the Red Bull Dual Ascent brings together the best climbers of the moment. From the Olympic champion, the Spaniard Alberto Ginés López, to the American Sasha DiGiulian, including the French Louna Ladevant and Melissa Le Nevé. On the program for the 3e edition organized from October 30 to November 2, the ascent, in mixed duels, of the imposing Verzasca dam, i.e. 150 meters of climbing, divided into six lengths. A show “made in Red Bull”, certainly, but of a very high level. To follow live during the final, expected this Saturday, November 2, from 2 p.m.
Since October 30, twenty high-level climbers divided into ten mixed teams have competed in a competition with a very specific format. The objective? Complete a large artificial route of 220 meters, open to a dam. In the background, the Verzasca valley, one of the best climbing spots in the world located in the south of Switzerland.
The Red Bull Dual Ascent takes place over four days, from October 30 to November 2. The first two days are for qualifications, the last for finals. The pairs are divided into duels on two routes of six parallel lengths – the first and last length being symmetrical while the others are perfectly identical.
During qualifications, the route was flash climbed (without prior recognition of the movements but with demonstration of the route shortly before the competition). To validate each length, the difficulty of which is between 6c and 8b, it is absolutely necessary that one of the two members of the rope party leads it and the other follows second. Unlike classic competitions, the number of attempts is unlimited. If they fall, climbers will have to choose between two options: either start the length again from the beginning to try to complete it, at the risk of wasting time and energy, or continue their ascent and receive a penalty.
At the end of these timed qualifications, the opening team will make some modifications to the routes, in order to reserve some surprises for the finalists, who will compete in a duel on November 2. Once in the final, the first team to reach the top of the route, whose level has been raised to 8b max, will win the competition.
