This Friday, November 1, the smell of burning is still strongly present in the city center.

On the night of October 31 to November 1, the Carrefour City in Guingamp was ravaged by a fire.

Shortly after 1 a.m., the fire started near the store's air conditioning.

Alerted by an alarm, Dany Courant, the manager, immediately went to the scene and tried to control the flames with a fire extinguisher.

Despite this intervention, the fire spread quickly. Faced with the critical situation, he called the firefighters.

Firefighters mobilized in number: 60 responders on site

The firefighters, alerted quickly, arrived within 12 minutes and managed to prevent the spread to the upper floors and neighboring buildings. “It could have been dramatic if the firefighters had not intervened so quickly,” confides a witness, met on site this Friday morning.

To bring the fire under control, 60 firefighters, from different surrounding fire stations, intervened all night, until 8 a.m.

A major impact for Guingamp

The Carrefour City, located in the heart of Guingamp, is heavily damaged. The store will remain closed for several weeks for repairs. Fortunately, the fire caused no injuries.

From the first observations, the Guingamp gendarmes favored the possibility of an electrical incident with the air conditioning as the probable origin of the fire. The investigation is underway to confirm this hypothesis.

A hard blow for residents and local businesses

The mayor of Guingamp, Philippe Le Goff, stayed on site all night to support the emergency services, but also the affected residents and traders.

The street in front of the store was reopened to traffic around 10 a.m., but this event remains a shock for the city.
