“Everything is better than expected, I had good legs and above all good feelings. Everything was not yet great because I had a little trouble in the middle of the stage, but I won and that’s the more important,” commented Evenepoel at the organization’s microphone.

“It’s always a plus for confidence and for the future. We’re going to enjoy this moment, take this race day by day. I’m very happy with my performance today.” In front of Joshua Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers) during the first intermediate passage, Evenepoel found himself behind the Briton in the second before winning.

“I had doubts after the second time because I knew that I was ahead by two seconds during the first intermediate and there, I was a second behind. I told myself that he was going very fast. I had I felt like I didn’t have the energy anymore but I gave it my all in the final, in the last bump and it’s an advantage for me, this last kilometer uphill.”

Asked about a possible final victory as a new goal, he wanted to put a damper on expectations: “Everything will depend on the legs during the last three stages, because I don’t know if I will be fit enough after these days. I don’t have had a lot of training and it’s already astonishing to be at such a level before the Tour (de France) so I want to make the most of it.”
