Two cars and a motorcycle fell when a section of the structure leading from the city to the local airport collapsed, according to firefighters.

“At the scene of the accident, three people unfortunately lost their lives and another died in hospital,” Colonel Julio Olaya, head of the road police in the municipality of Soledad, told local channel Noticias Caracol. , where the airport is located.

“Apparently it was the rains that caused this subsidence,” he added.

“The most likely scenario is that what remains of the structure also collapses,” warned Eduardo Verano, the governor of the department of Atlantico, where the tragedy occurred.

Authorities closed the bridge and set up alternative routes to the airport.

The metropolis of some two million inhabitants is regularly affected by flash floods.

The Colombian government has warned that the cyclical La Niña weather phenomenon will lead to a heavier-than-usual rainy season in 2024.
