French people stranded in New Caledonia by riots arrive in Paris

Authorities there and the Interior Ministry in Paris said five people, including two police officers, were killed during protests earlier this week.

The first French nationals, evacuated from New Caledonia by the Australian and New Zealand armies, arrived on Sunday at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris after a 40-hour journey.

Tourists were stranded in New Caledonia due to riots in the region.

Australia and New Zealand have started sending evacuation planes to this French territory in the South Pacific prey to violence at the start of the weekin order to extract their nationals as well as other tourists stranded in the region.

French authorities in New Caledonia and the Interior Ministry in Paris said six people, including two police officers, were killed after protests earlier this week against voting reforms promoted by the government of President Emmanuel Macron turned into chaos.

At least 60 members of the security forces were injured and 214 people were arrested as a result clashes with police, arson and lootingdeclared the highest French official in the territory, the High Commissioner of the Republic Louis Le Franc.

La Tontouta international airport in New Caledonia remains closed to commercial flightsbut military flights continue to evacuate stranded tourists.
