McDonald's caught up in a health scandal in the United States? According to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a bacteria of the same strain as E.Coli may have contaminated several customers in different states of the country. In total, reports CNN, 49 patients were diagnosed, in ten states, and an elderly person has died in Colorado. Most cases have also been recorded in this state as well as in Nebraska. At least ten people have been hospitalized so far.

Furthermore, a child suffers from hemolytic uremic syndromea rare but serious complication, mainly renal, which can result from infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. The vast majority of patients said they had eaten a burger at McDonald's, le «Quarter Pounder»composed in particular of meat, pickle and cheese. But according to the American administration responsible for the surveillance of food products and medicines, the contamination could mainly come from fried onions.

The burger in question removed from sale in some states

As the investigation continues, the fast food chain has stopped using onions and beef patties in several states. According to McDonald's, this would beone supplier which would serve three distribution centers. McDonald's has confirmed, however, that other beef-based burgers, including the Cheeseburger, Hamburger, Big Mac, McDouble or Double Cheese Burger “are not affected and are available”.

On the other hand, in several Western states, such as Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, the Quarter Pounder is no longer sold for the moment. Symptoms linked to E.Coli bacteria are diarrhea, fever, severe stomach cramps and even vomiting. While they usually appear three or four days after ingesting the bacteria, in some people they can cause more serious effectshence these hospitalizations.

Customer health “remains the priority” from McDonald's. In the meantime, the action of the fast-food giant fell by more than 8% after the closing of the New York Stock Exchange.
