VIDEO – After the famous pig artist died, Joanne Lefson learned that a farmer had seen his sheep trying to paint with a paintbrush.
In the small town of Franschhoek in South Africa, a sheep named Baanksy has decided to follow in the footsteps of Pigcasso, the famous pig artist. Its owner, Joanne Lefson, who had already launched Pigcasso’s artistic career in 2016, received a call from a farmer informing her that her sheep had tried to paint with a brush in his enclosure. Intrigued, she went to the Farm Sanctuaire SA animal shelter to investigate.
«When Baanksy was a lamb in 2022, he was fascinated by Pigcasso, he would often come between us and make things complicated. I never thought he could do this. (…) For me, there was only one “Pigcasso”» said Joanne. “When my farm manager told me that the sheep had tried to paint, I didn’t believe him, thinking he had drunk a little too much.explained the artist.
Nevertheless, a few months after Pigcasso’s death on March 7, Joanne decided to carry out her investigation. When she gave Baanksy the brush, the lamb took it in his mouth and began to paint, attempting to replicate his mentor’s style.
Observing Baanksy opened my eyes to the extraordinary skills of sheep and showed me that they are not only endearing beings, but also animals of remarkable intelligence

«Throughout my life I have been told that sheep are stupid. If Baanksy hadn’t picked up the paintbrush that day, I probably never would have considered giving him a chance to explore his creative abilities“, explained Joanne Lefson. “Observing Baanksy opened my eyes to the extraordinary skills of sheep and showed me that they are not only endearing beings, but also animals of remarkable intelligence, deserving of our empathy and deeper understanding“, she said.
