Spain | Four dead and around twenty injured in restaurant collapse

(Madrid) The death toll from the collapse of a restaurant on the Spanish island of Majorca has risen to four dead and around twenty injured, a spokeswoman for the tourist archipelago’s emergency services told AFP of the Balearic Islands.

Several people are seriously injured, said this spokesperson, without being able to specify their number.

“Two people are confirmed dead” and there are “between 12 and 14 injured to varying degrees” after “the roof of a two-story building collapsed” in the area called Playa de Palma, in the south of Palma from Majorca, a tourist island in the Mediterranean archipelago of the Balearic Islands, had first indicated the rescue services on X.

The collapse occurred late Thursday afternoon in a restaurant located in this area very popular with foreign tourists, when the high season had already started, according to local media.

Several firefighters, Palma police officers and ambulances went to the scene, according to the same Source.

The Balearic Islands, known for their crystal clear waters and beaches, are Spain’s second largest tourist destination after Catalonia. In 2023, they welcomed more than 14 million tourists, according to official figures.
