Lugagnac. A beautiful day dedicated to pastoralism

Saturday May 11 in Lugagnac took place the third edition of the Pasture Festival organized by the Pastoral Land Association of Crégols Lugagnac, the Caussignols breeders’ association, the municipalities of Crégols and Lugagnac and the PNRCQ. 23 free pastoral land associations were created in the Lot with the triple objective of reducing fire risk, preserving open environments welcoming to biodiversity and offering additional forage resources to breeders. That of Crégols-Lugagnac was created in 2017 under the leadership of the two municipalities, the department and the Causses du Quercy regional natural park on a study area of more than 1,000 ha. Around fifty owners have given their consent for breeders to come and graze on natural bushy areas.

“After five years of operation, thanks to the mobilization of owners, the results are visible: we have succeeded in reopening areas covered with grazing and thus reducing the risk of fire. It is collective and virtuous work that we wish to strengthen” q, explains Lilian Boulpiquante, president of the AFP. 230 hectares of brush are thus maintained by the horses, cows and sheep of the Caussignols breeders’ association, according to an ecopastoral management plan developed by the Park, the department and the chamber of agriculture.

“The mobilization of the owners was not easy, continues the president. We need to reassure and convince. This is why we imagined this party: it seemed to us a good way to present the results of our work and to raise awareness new owners This would not have been possible without everyone’s help: I would therefore like to thank all the volunteers and partners involved today.”

The team had put together a rich and diverse program for young and old around pastoralism: film debates, activities to discover biodiversity, demonstrations of herding dogs, sheep shearing and wool work, craft market, gourmet meal and concert.
