The Brestoises beat Rapid Bucharest 34-31 and thus take the lead in their Champions League group.
The Brest handball players won in the Rapid Bucharest arena (34-31), Saturday on the occasion of the 6th day of the Champions League, a week after conceding against Györ at home (35-34) their first defeat of the season. The BBH (10 pts) temporarily takes the lead in Group B while waiting for the Hungarians’ match (6 pts) against Odense at the end of the day.
Trailing by two lengths in the 40th minute (19-21), they regained control thanks in particular to a switch to a “1-5” defense (one player advanced in front of the others) and the major performance of Anna Vyakhireva. The Russian right-back, star recruit of the off-season, scored 11 goals (from 15 attempts), including a splendid “Chabala” (dead leaf with effect) on the right wing after a change of hand to give four goals advances in the 51st minute. And after a Floriane André save (6/23) on a -2 ball for the Romanians (55th), she sealed the success with a new goal (33-28) three minutes from the end.
