ChatGPT is coming to Windows: yes but…

After several months of waiting, OpenAI has finally launched a dedicated version of its ChatGPT application for Windows. Except that, for the moment, this new feature is reserved for paying subscribers, such as those of ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team and Edu. This launch still marks a new stage in OpenAI’s expansion strategy, which seeks to integrate its AI more deeply into work environments.

A first version in testing for paying subscribers

Available on the Microsoft Store, this preliminary version of the ChatGPT application for Windows already offers several very useful features. It of course allows you to ask questions to the AI in a dedicated window, while continuing to use other applications in parallel. Using the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut, users can quickly access the application, improving productivity. As on macOS, the ability to import files and photos, as well as access to OpenAI’s gpt-4-turbo model, provides additional options to optimize your workflow.

But still limited functionality

Although promising, this preliminary version still has some limitations. Unlike its equivalent on macOS, it does not support advanced voice mode, a feature appreciated by users. Some integrations with the GPT Store are not yet available. OpenAI plans to add these features in future updates, opening to all users by the end of the year.

The strategic positioning of OpenAI

The development of this application for Windows is part of a broader strategy by OpenAI, aiming to make its virtual assistant indispensable in professional environments (or to conquer the world, to put it more simply). By making ChatGPT easy to access and seamlessly integrated into major operating systems, OpenAI hopes to compete with traditional office suites, and of course Copilot on Windows.

Soon for everyone

You understood, if the application is currently reserved for paying subscribers, OpenAI has confirmed that a full version will be available for free before the end of 2024. In the meantime, non-subscribed users can continue to use the web version of ChatGPT.

The macOS version of the ChatGPT app, released a few months agoalso allows users to ask questions to the AI in a dedicated interface, and also offers features such as importing files and photos, and access to the OpenAI gpt-4-turbo model.

Do you use ChatGPT a lot, or another AI assistant? If yes, which one?
