The town center of Annonay in Ardèche is flooded and schools and nurseries were evacuated Thursday morning following heavy rainfall which affected this department placed on red rain-flood alert, we learned from the town hall. “The entire flooded city center is evacuated,” the town hall told AFP by telephone.

“As the situation is evolving more quickly than expected, it is imperative to stay at home,” adds the town hall.

In video images posted on social networks, torrents of water could be seen in the streets of the city, with submerged vehicles. Residents walked in water up to mid-thigh between buildings.

School and urban transport are suspended and seven streets in the city center closed to traffic, the town hall said in a press release. “Students in secondary schools are now safely confined,” it is specified.
