Rufus Wainwright ‘mortified’ by Trump’s musical choice

“The height of blasphemy. » These are the words that singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright used in the aftermath of the strange musical episode during which Donald Trump chose to play for 39 uninterrupted minutes the songs that often punctuate his rallies rather than continuing to answer questions from participants in a citizens’ assembly held in the Philadelphia suburbs Monday evening. Trump notably swayed to the rhythm of the song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen performed by Wainwright.

“The song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen has become a hymn to peace, love and the acceptance of truth,” the artist who was raised in Montreal wrote on X. “Over the years, I have been extremely honored to be associated with this ode to tolerance. Seeing Trump and his supporters commune with this music last night was the height of blasphemy. Of course, I in no way approve of this attitude and I was mortified, but the bright side in me hopes that perhaps, by truly inhabiting and listening to the words of Cohen’s masterpiece, Donald Trump might feel a hint of remorse for what he caused. I’m not holding my breath. Needless to say, I’m all for Kamala! »
