France concerned about Chinese military exercises near Taiwan

The French government expresses its deep concern about the military maneuvers carried out by China around Taiwan. In a statement, the French Foreign Ministry, known as the Quai d’Orsay, clearly stated: “We have followed with concern the military exercises carried out by the People’s Republic of China around Taiwan.”

reiterated its commitment to preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, described as essential to global security and prosperity. These maneuvers, known as “Joint Sword-2024B,” began on October 14. During these exercises, Beijing mobilized fighter planes, bombers and several ships, including destroyers and frigates, in the maritime region surrounding Taiwan.

The Chinese Defense Ministry explained that these operations were intended to send “a stern warning against separatist acts by Taiwan independence forces”. Their objective is to “test the joint operational capabilities” of Chinese troops.

In response, the French government emphasized its opposition to any unilateral change to the status quo through force or coercion. He insists on the need to “avoid any escalation in the Taiwan Strait”. Furthermore, the Taiwanese authorities strongly condemned these exercises, calling them “irrational and provocative behavior”, in turn deploying forces to face this threat.

China still regards Taiwan as an integral part of its territory. Beijing regularly justifies its military exercises, considering them as legitimate actions to “safeguard sovereignty and national unity”.
