The custody of the police officer who killed a man suspected of having set fire to the Rouen synagogue on Friday May 17 has been lifted, the prosecutor’s office said in a press release.

“The city’s video surveillance images confirm that he used his weapon under conditions permitted by the internal security code,” specifies the prosecution.

A search at the uncle and aunt’s house

A man was shot by the police on Friday May 17 near the Rouen synagogue. Aged 24, with no criminal record and under obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) for less than a year, the man is suspected of having attempted to set fire to the city’s synagogue.

“The fire expert noted the existence of a single fire, near the bimah, the table from which the Torah is read. In all likelihood, the fire would have been lit from the outside through a window” , indicates the prosecution.

On the photos that BFMTV was able to obtain, we see the walls of the religious building blackened by the start of the fire. The altar was also partly destroyed by the flames.

A search was carried out this Friday at the home of the uncle and aunt of the 24-year-old man, who were hosting him, but “did not provide any elements likely to shed light on the motivation of the person concerned “.
