Energy in Luxembourg: Aid for gas and electricity “will not be cut off sharply on January 1”

The announcement of the 2023 profit of 171 million euros from the Encevo group provokes reactions. “At the same time, households were told that they should expect drastic energy costs from 2025, with an increase of up to 60%,” noted the Luxembourg Consumers’ Union (ULC) this Friday. However, energy costs, which have increased sharply in recent years, are already weighing more and more on households.

In 2023, an average-sized household consuming 4,000 kWh per year would pay an annual electricity bill of 1,100 to 1,200 euros, including 300 to 400 euros covered by the State, Claude Seywert, CEO of Encevo, illustrated on Wednesday. , parent company of Enovos (electricity and gas supplier). For gas, this bill was 3,400 euros, including a subsidy of 900 euros from the State. The ULC therefore asks the government to maintain the cap on energy prices beyond the end of the year. Same story from Déi Lenk who this Friday urges the government “to take a position as quickly as possible”.

Contacted, the Ministry of the Economy assures that state subsidies “will not be stopped strictly” on January 1st. “There are plans for a gradual abolition of aid,” indicates a spokesperson. The terms will be presented soon.
