On Sunday, all Belgians over the age of 18 went to the polls to vote. And some citizens were called to be assessors. A role not to be taken lightly.

In Zelzate, as in many other counting offices, the rules are strict. All possible irregularities during the counting of ballots are carefully scrutinized. The building was closed to outsiders. “Those who wanted to go out, for example to retrieve an item from their vehicle, were refused access on their return. It was forbidden to answer phone calls inside. Those who wanted to smoke could do so, but under strict supervision,” several anonymous assessors explained to Nieuwsblad.

From the start of the counting, all office presidents, assessors and witnesses took an oath to respect the confidentiality of the vote and the results. But the temptation was probably too strong for one of them. A person went to the toilet to call and give the provisional results! He was denounced.

His fate still remains unclear. But he risks a hefty sanction. Eight days to six months in prison and/or a fine of between 100 and 500 euros.
