The North-East of France has been affected by heavy rainfall in recent hours. Thursday evening, two departments, the Moselle and the Bas-Rhin were placed on orange “rain-flood” alert. Météo France has extended the alert until this Friday 10 p.m. “The rains continue for part of this Friday”forecasters say, “eastern Moselle and Bas-Rhin are the most exposed sectors”.

Since Thursday evening, according to Météo France, “we note a layer of water between 40 and 65 mm from the north of Bas-Rhin to the Metz region.” Roads and streets are flooded, such as Boulay in Moselle or Gundershoffen in Alsace.

Around fifty interventions in Bas-Rhin

In the Bas-Rhinthe prefecture reported this Friday morning, “around fifty interventions in progress by firefighters throughout the department, mainly for flooding of basements and cellars. They are concentrated in the north of the department, particularly around Sarre-Union”. Of the flood peaks are planned for the end of the day and the next night on the Moder and Lauter rivers and on the Middle Saar/Eichel section.

The prefect of Bas-Rhin activated the departmental operational center in the prefecture in order to coordinate the action of the services.

“Values ​​close to records”

This Friday morning, two other departments, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Vosges have gone into orange “flood” alert. Météo France warns of the risk of significant flooding on the Meurthe upstream (Meurthe-et-Moselle) and Mortagne (Vosges).

“The quantities of water expected during the episode are of the order of 50 to 90 mm”add the forecasters, “these are values ​​close to records for daily rainfall totals for these regions”. Subsequently, the rains will gradually weaken on Friday evening as they shift towards the north.
