Marco Angulo, a young Ecuadorian international midfielder, died at the age of 22 in a road accident in October. Two other people, including a player, lost their lives in the tragedy.
The LDU Quito club announced on Monday the death of its player Marco Angulo. The 22-year-old midfielder succumbed to his injuries 35 days after his road accident on October 7. “It is with deep pain and sadness that we regret to announce the death of our beloved player Marco Angulo,” the club said in a message on X. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to his loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.
Launched at Independiente del Valle, the midfielder played for a season in MLS at Cincinnati before being loaned to Quito last March. He had two selections with Ecuador against Iraq (0-0) in 2022 and Australia (1-2) in March 2023. According to information from the media El Universo, the car in which Angulo and four other people were traveling allegedly failed to respect roadworks signs on a highway southeast of Quito and crashed into a 50-ton metal structure.
Two other people were killed in this terrible accident: player Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, winger of Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Diogo Nazareno playing at Cuniburo Fútbol Club.
Very seriously injured, Marco Angulo had undergone emergency skull surgery to reduce pressure and suffered from pulmonary contusion. He had been fighting for his life ever since before losing his fight on Monday. Several of his teammates paid tribute to him on social networks, including the captain of LDU Quito, Ezequiel Piovi.
