Municipal elections: who are the champions of preference votes?

Municipal elections are those where voters feel closer to the candidates, which often results in high preference vote scores. Who are the most popular personalities in this election?

The mayor of Namur Maxime Prévot is the candidate in this Sunday’s municipal election who won the most preferential votes in Wallonia. With 15,682 votes, the president of the Engagés is ahead of the candidates from the three large socialist cities of Mons (Nicholas Martin15,152 votes), Charleroi (Paul Magnette12,080 votes, Thomas Dermine11,360 votes) and Liège (Willy Demeyer8,245 votes). In 2018, Maxime Prévot was 2nd (12,825 votes), far behind Paul Magnette (22,475 votes).

In the capital, Philippe Close, the mayor of Brussels City, was chosen by 9,000 voters.

In Flanders, Bart De Weverwith 60,000 votes in preference in Antwerp, is the big favorite.

And what about the “penetration rate”?

The other candidates’ hit parade concerns the “penetration rate”, that is to say the ratio between the number of preference votes and the total votes validly cast in the constituency. It is more favorable to candidates from small towns. The 2024 Walloon champion is also an Engagé. The mayor of Beaumont (Hainaut) Bruno Lambert achieved a rate of 67.19%. Its Municipal Interests-Independents (ICI) list won 18 of the 19 seats up for grabs, against the MR and the PS.

The top five is completed by Valérie Dejardin (PS) in Limburg (63.36%), Arnaud Allard (Engaged) in Vresse-sur-Semois (56.55%), Carmen Ramlot (Engaged) in Rouvroy (55.37%) and Marc Lejeune (Engaged) in Beauraing (52.67%).
