Released in cinemas in 2022, the thread baptized Kompromatdirected by Jérôme Salle, will be broadcast for the first time unencrypted on French television on Sunday October 13, 2024, from 9:05 p.m. on France 2. Worn by Gilles Lellouchethis feature film begins in 2017. Mathieu Roussel, a French expatriate played by Gilles Lellouche, works in Russia in Irkutsk (Siberia) as director of the Alliance française.
His wife Alice strongly criticizes him for leaving France and wants to return there with their little daughter Rose, which Mathieu refuses. During a violent verbal exchange, Alice tells Mathieu that she doesn’t love him anymore. One evening, an artistic performance is given at the French cultural center in the presence of Mathieu and Mr. Ivanovich, the Russian donor who made it possible to restore the performance hall.
Kompromat : a feature film inspired by a true story
The performance, which shows two naked men kissing on stage, is a fiasco. The public is not at all interested and even shocked. Mathieu learns during a hunting trip with Ivanovich that the Russian mentality is incompatible with such decadence of morals under the guise of freedom and artistic creation; and that he Mathieu Roussel, symbolizes everything that Russia despises in the West.
For the record, Kompromat is a Russian term for compromising documents, genuine or fabricated, used to harm a politician, journalist, businessman or other public figure. While this type of maneuver is not rare in Russia, they usually concern Russians.
The filming of this feature film was quite “rough” for the director and his teams
For his film, Jérôme Salle was very freely inspired by a true story which had the particularity of having involved a Frenchman, Yoann Barbereau. The latter recounted his journey in the book In the jails of Siberia. However, the film is not strictly speaking an adaptation. The producers do not own the rights to adapt the book.
The filming of Kompromat started on October 19, 2020 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The place was not chosen at random. Due to the subject matter, the crews deliberately chose not to film in Russia. Particularly in the Irkutsk region, where the action of the feature film takes place. What’s more, Filming took place during the Covid-19 pandemic. Which only added difficulties. The director reports having retained the memory of a “rough shooting“. Shooting also took place in Paris.
