Joseph Marr enjoys working in many mediums, such as painting, sculpture, video and photography. For his latest artistic work, the Australian based in Berlin, Germany, began sculpting shapes, including humans, in sugar.

One of his works, called “Open Heart”, is even exhibited for free in Gleisdreieck Park in Kreuzberg, one of the most popular parks in the German capital. Made with 800 kg of sugar, it represents a giant heart.

“Sugar evokes a reaction in almost everyone, whether to celebrate important events with beauty, sweet memories, traditions and rituals, or to be considered the ‘white poison’,” describes the sculptor on his personal website.

But the latter did not expect such a reaction from the public. Some of his works exhibited in Stockholm, Berlin, Sydney and Venice were victims of a strange attack: visitors began to lick the statues. “I didn’t expect people to eat the sculpture,” he confesses to the media outlet Great Big Story. He was even surprised that the licks were repeated, posing a hygiene problem. “You don’t know who licked” the sugar block. “No one was afraid of that. It was weird.”

People, with their open tongues, perhaps do not suspect that the sculptures are the result of long and complicated work. And they’re not lollipops.
