Frenchman Côme Girardot broke the world record for the “death dive” on October 7, 2024 by performing a jump of 44.3 meters in height.

Coming from Norway, “døds” is a very dangerous extreme diving practice, which one should not attempt to indulge in at random. It involves launching yourself into the void and curling up when you hit the water to soften the shock.

“I had planned everything”

This October 7, the young French athlete Côme Girardot, 22, broke the world record by jumping 44.3 meters from a cliff in Spain.

The Frenchman from beat the previous world record of 41.7 meters which was held by the Franco-Swiss Lucien Charlon. In detail, his jump lasted three seconds with a speed of 106km/h.

“The jump seemed much higher than I thought”he confided to our colleagues at the Hurry. “I had planned the whole jump, my movements, everything. But, when I was almost done with all these movements, I was still 25 m from the water.”

A previous world record in Aude

The young Bordeaux native had already broken the world record for døds by jumping 34 meters from the Gouffre de l’Œil Doux in Aude on July 4, 2023. He had also attracted the wrath of the mayor of the common. The discipline of “døds” even has its own federation in Norway. By the way, the word itself is Norwegian and means “death dive”. In the country, since 2008, a “døds” world cup has even been organized every year.
