More than two years later, David Goffin brought down a member of the top 10 this Wednesday. The Liégeois achieved the feat of bringing down world No.3 Alexander Zverev during the round of 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai ($8,995,555), Wednesday. The Liégeois, 66th in the world, claimed the scalp of the German, seeded N.2, after two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
At the end of the match, Goffin then dedicated his victory to his daughter Emma, born in September: “I wanted to show my daughter that I can be a good tennis player,” he told the ATP . “I want to continue for a few more years to show him that I can still play tennis. That’s what I’m doing now, even if she doesn’t realize it yet. I hope that in the future she will come and support me a little.”
Goffin expressed his happiness by writing an “E” on camera after his victory against Zverev. “My wife and I are very happy to have her in our lives. We couldn’t be happier,” he stressed.
The Belgian N.1 will now face the American Taylor Fritz (ATP 7/N.7). The recent finalist of the US Open, who is coming off a failure in the first round in Tokyo, swept aside the Dane Holger Rune (ATP 14/N.12) in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-2.
