To help kyiv in the war in Ukraine, the EU sanctions Iran

The European Union (EU) is intensifying its actions against Iran. The 27 accuse the regime of delivering ballistic missiles to Russia as part of the war in Ukraine. These new sanctions aim to curb Tehran’s involvement in military support for Moscow. Meeting in Luxembourg, the Union’s foreign ministers decided to sanction 14 Iranian entities and individuals. These sanctions include a freeze of assets in the European Union and also a travel ban on European territory for the individuals concerned.

Among the targets of these sanctions, we find in particular three Iranian airlines: Iran Air, Saha Airlines and Mahan Air. These companies are accused of having facilitated deliveries of ballistic missiles to Russia, thus contributing to the intensification Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and cities as winter approaches.

Along with these European sanctions, other Western countries have also taken similar measures against Iran. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany had already announced sanctions targeting Iranian companies involved in the production and delivery of drones and ballistic missiles to Russia. According to the White House, Russian soldiers have even been trained in Iran in the use of the Fath-360 ballistic missile, with a range of 120 km.

The influence of tensions in the Middle East

In addition to the military sector, these sanctions also extend to other strategic areas for Iran. The oil sector, for example, was hit by US sanctions, announced in response to a missile attack carried out by Iran against Israel on October 1, 2024. Additionally, the Iranian company Farzanegan Propulsion Systems Design Bureau, specializing in the design of missile partsand the Iranian Space Agency, involved in the development of technologies related to ballistic missiles, are also targeted by these sanctions.

Faced with these sanctions, the Iranian regime reacted firmly. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei called the measures “ unjustified and contrary to international law “. Tehran continues to reject accusations of missile transfers to Russia, while reaffirming its right to defense and military cooperation with other nations, including Moscow.

These European sanctions were also welcomed by Israel, which sees in these measures a desire by the international community to counter ” dangerous actions » from Iran. All this, in a context of increasing tensions in the Middle East.
