Storm Kirk: Floods in Yvelines, roads cut

Storm Kirk hits the south of hard on Wednesday October 9, 2024. While Météo had placed the department on orange alert, the intense rains caused significant flooding and many roads closed to traffic. In several municipalities such as , Ablis and Chevreuse, the situation remains critical, while the Saint-Exupéry school in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse will be closed tomorrow.

L’Ouragan Kirk has not finished showing us. Depression is now sweeping over the Yvelinesbringing violent downpours which transform the main roads into real rivers. From 7 p.m., the Yvelines police headquarters announced the closure of several roads in the most affected municipalities.

THE closed roads :

  • Emanced
  • Bullion
  • Sainte-Mesme
  • Bonnelles
  • Ablis
  • Chevreuse
  • Rambouillet
  • HAS Magny-les-Hameaux : the Port-Royal des Champs road (RD195)
  • HAS Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse : the road to Boulay-les-Trous and the avenue des Molières

The situation remains delicate Rambouilletwhere Mayor Véronique Matillon informs that a Crisis PC was opened due to water levels reaching up to one meter in places. Patrols keep watch all night in areas at risk, notably the Groussay plain, which is often flooded. In the town, more than 40 mm of rain have already been recorded, and up to an additional 80 mm are still expected, which is equivalent to fifteen days of precipitation in a single day.

Vigilance is also necessary for Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreusewhere the Saint-Exupéry school will be closed tomorrow. Located at the confluence of the Yvette and the Montabé stream, this kindergarten of 180 students is particularly vulnerable to flooding, Le Parisien informs us. The town, having suffered significant damage during floods in 2018, is not taking any risks: the furniture has been raised and sandbags have been distributed to traders. Students will be welcomed at the Envol leisure center, while waiting for a return to normal.

The recommendations of the authorities remain strict: limit travel and above all not engage in flooded roadseven partially submerged, in order to avoid any accident. Sanitation networks are also at risk of overflowing, which could further complicate the situation. Additional closures are also to be expected if the rains continue, and the evolution of the waterways is being monitored very closely.

While the Storm Kirk continues on its way, we expect an eventful night in the Yvelineswhere caution remains necessary in the face of floods which are only just beginning. In all cases, follow the advice of the Prefecture:

  • Never go down into basements
  • Stay away from waterways
  • Avoid at all costs, whether on foot or by car, on a flooded road.
  • Limit your movements and find refuge
