A geomagnetic storm of severe force could make it possible to observe the Northern Lights this weekend in the Lanaudière region, but also elsewhere in Quebec.

This storm of rare intensity is caused by an eruption on the surface of the Sun. This could be the strongest storm in nearly 20 years according to the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

To improve your chances of observing auroras, it is recommended to look north and move away from any form of light pollution.

Note that the geomagnetic storm could also cause disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field, and therefore affect the efficiency of the cellular network, GPS and satellite systems as well as disrupt the Internet network.
