A 73-year-old Swiss man died around 5 a.m. on Friday in Bienne (BE) in a fire in his apartment, which was part of a six-story building. The fire was brought under control.

Professional firefighters were able to evacuate “an unconscious man from the building, then extinguish and control the fire,” said the Bernese cantonal police. Other residents were able to evacuate the building on their own.

Despite immediate rescue measures, the septuagenarian died, police said. No other people were injured. The burning apartment was heavily damaged by the fire. The other apartments in the building are habitable again. An investigation is underway to determine the causes of the fire and the amount of material damage. (jah/ats)
