Millas accident trial: on the first day of hearing, the bus driver “is there and will be there to cope”

His daughter, his brother and his cousin. It was with her family supporters that Nadine Oliveira arrived this Monday around 1:40 p.m. at the Aix-en-Provence court for the opening of the second Millas trial. The appeal hearing will make it possible to judge once again who was driving the school bus before it was violently hit by a TER train at the Millas level crossing on December 14, 2017. The terrible accident caused the death of six college studentsand he injured 17 others. During the first trial, the driver was found guilty.****

Almost unrecognizable, transformed, Nadine Oliveira appeared with her hair cut short, dressed in a blue shirt and black pants. Aged 55 today, “elle shows willingness to attend the entire trialassures one of his two lawyers, Louis Fagniez. “She manifests it as during the first trial.” At first instance, two years earlier, the defendant had left the hearing on the fourth day, the victim of a heart attack which did not allow him to return at the court. The latter then refused to postpone the debates, as the defense demanded, supported by a hospitalization certificate.

After disclosing her identity, the defendant attended the first debates on procedural issues. She did not speak this Monday but will be questioned Tuesday morning. The investigation director as well as direct witnesses of the accident will also take the stand.

Of the 123 civil parties, around ten victims had made the trip in Bouches-du-Rhône this Monday. But many followed the proceedings from one of the rooms of the courthouse, on Place Arago.

Alicia Poveda is one of the victims present at the opening of the trial. Now 19 years old, she was in the school bus hit by the train on the day of the accident. She lost a leg there. “So now Nadine Oliveira needs to speakshe blurted. I want her to recognize that it’s her fault and ask us for forgiveness.”

“If she feels that she is not at fault, that is her choiceshe adds. But I expect at least an apology. I lost my leg but also my adolescence, I have problems with my back, my pelvis, my joints… The accident is still there. She needs to apologize so we can rebuild.”
