FC Sion took a further step towards direct promotion to the Super League on Thursday.

Didier Tholot’s men won 2-1 in Aarau to temporarily take a six-point lead over Thun, which still has three matches to play in this Challenge League championship.

At eleven against ten since stoppage time in the first half after the expulsion of Pappoe (the first of the season for Aarau!), Sion had to wait until the last quarter of an hour to force the decision. It was the ‘joker’ Georgi Rusev who scored the winning goal in the 76th minute.

The Bulgarian international threw himself at the far post to catch an incoming cross from Ilyas Chouaref. He had come on six minutes earlier in place of Théo Bouchlarhem, author of the 1-0 in the 33rd minute. An advantage which was short-lived, Aarau equalizing in the 36th minute, but which the Sédunois were able to regain at the end of the match.

This victory opens the doors to the Super League wide for FC Sion, which only needs three points to validate its promotion. President Christian Constantin’s club has a much better goal difference than Thun: +44 against +26 for the Bernese, who will host Schaffhausen on Saturday as part of this 34th day.
