“Top secret” files kept in Florida: Donald Trump’s trial postponed indefinitely

His chances of being tried in this case before the presidential election on November 5 are now very slim. A Florida court has postponed indefinitely the start of the criminal trial of former US President Donald Trump, accused of making negligent use of classified documents, according to a decision rendered Tuesday.

The trial in this case of the Republican presidential candidate in November was supposed to open on May 20, but the federal judge considered this date untenable due to the number of preliminary requests presented to the court. She has not set a new date.

40 counts

Donald Trump was indicted last summer by federal courts as part of this investigation into his negligent management of confidential documents, a first for a former American president. He is accused in this file of having put the security of the United States at risk by keeping confidential documents after his departure from the White House in January 2021 in his residence in Florida, instead of handing them over to the National Archives as required. required by law.

He has pleaded not guilty to all 40 charges against him, including “illegal retention of national security information”, “obstruction of justice” and “false testimony”. He is also accused of attempting to destroy evidence in the case. The heaviest charges are punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

This is one of four cases for which the former US president has been indicted. Donald Trump has been appearing in New York since April 15 for having disguised as “legal expenses” payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels so that she would hide a sexual relationship she allegedly had with the billionaire.

If he were elected again in November, Donald Trump could, once inaugurated in January 2025, order the abandonment of the two federal proceedings against him: the affair of confidential documents, as well as that carried out in the capital Washington for accusations of illegal attempts to reverse the results of the presidential election won by Joe Biden in 2020.
