“The objective is to recognize and thank the deans for their contribution. They participated in its evolution, its development and its opening to the world. It is also an opportunity to show that growing old is synonymous with pride and social involvement, particularly through volunteering,” declares Micheline Germain, president of the Association of Retirees from Education and Other Public Services of the Quebec (AREQ). She insists that the perception of older people should not be limited to vulnerability: “There are many seniors who are still active and engaged, and it is a great opportunity to expose them to the population. »

Among the main issues affecting seniors, Ms. Germain highlights maintaining their autonomy. “We believe that the more we are able to offer care and services at home, the safer they will be in their environment, surrounded by their loved ones. This helps slow down the aging process,” she says. She emphasizes that for an elderly person, moving can be a difficult time, hence the importance of promoting solutions that allow them to stay at home as long as possible.

Another major issue concerns the increasing cost of living, a problem that they are particularly faced with. “Their income is often limited to annuities, which do not always keep up with inflation. This creates anxiety for many, especially those who fear having to leave their homes due to rising costs.
rents,” she says. She adds that some seniors are faced with a reduction in services offered in seniors’ residences, or with difficulties accessing health care, due to the labor shortage in these sectors.

As for whether governments are doing enough for seniors, Ms. Germain responds cautiously: “There is good will, but there is still a way to go. We must continue to make our needs heard and ensure that the policies in place truly respond to their reality. » She also highlights the bureaucratic challenges they face, particularly for access to home care and services, which are crucial for their autonomy.

She also mentions the need to further enhance their expertise within the community: “They play a fundamental role, particularly through their voluntary commitment, which represents an immense contribution. If the company had to pay for all this work, the cost would be enormous. »

Access to home services remains, according to Ms. Germain, a priority issue for the elderly. “It is essential to have quality care, provided by competent and reliable professionals, at affordable costs. Many treatments do not require a trip to a hospital or clinic. They should be able to receive this care in the comfort of their home,” she says.

She recalls that the International Day of Older Adults is an opportunity to recognize the importance of their place in society and to highlight the challenges they face.
