Newly promoted Holstein Kiel achieved a major success in the Bundesliga on matchday six. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team won 2:2 (1:2) at champions Bayer Leverkusen despite an early 2-0 deficit.

by Tobias Knaack

It certainly didn’t look like the second point in Kiel’s young Bundesliga history after eight minutes. Victor Boniface (4th) and Jonas Hofmann (8th) scored early and brought back memories of the loss against Bayern Munich (1:6).

But Max Geschwill (45th + 5) and substitute Fiete Arp (69th / FE) ensured the “Storks” unexpected second Bundesliga point after a significant increase in performance.

The Kiel team go into the international break with the exhilaration of the sensational point win. Then they make the next attempt to land the first three-pointer in the first floor of German football. Then Union Berlin comes to the Holstein Stadium (October 20th, 3:30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter).

Leverkusen with an early double strike

Before the duel with the master, Rapp had spoken of great respect and sharpened senses. After eight minutes on the lawn of the Leverkusen Arena, it was clear that the respect was too great and the senses were not sharp enough. First the hosts countered the KSV in a textbook manner via Florian Wirtz and Exequiel Palacios, and in the end Boniface scored from a half-left position (4th).

Then Holstein keeper Timon Weiner took too long to break free. Once again it was Wirtz and Palacios who prepared, this time Hofmann scored with a powerful low shot into the bottom left corner (8th). The Schleswig-Holsteiners didn’t get into the game or into the duels at all. They only with difficulty blocked attempts from Wirtz (9th), Boniface (12th) and Alejandro Grimaldo (20th). In the 26th minute, Boniface’s supposed second goal was canceled by VAR due to a slight offside position.

Geschwwill hits with the shoulder for Kiel

Afterwards, coach Xabi Alonso’s team let go of the promoted team without the latter initially appearing offensively. And yet we went into the break only one goal behind: Geschwwill sank a corner from the right side with his shoulder (45th + 5th). Shortly before, Shuto Machino had tested Bayer goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky for the first time with a shot.

What had looked like a better training game for Leverkusen for 45 minutes suddenly became a serious competition. In the second round, the KSV suddenly became toxic in the duels and hardly allowed the favorite any chances.

Arp converts the penalty safely

And up front, two changes from Rapp paid off: He brought on Benedikt Pichler and Arp for the pale Machino and Steven Skrzybski – and he scored the equalizer in the 69th minute. Jeremy Frimpong fouled Armin Gigovic after a Kiel counterattack in the penalty area, Arp grabbed the ball, sent Hradecky into the wrong corner and let the away block celebrate. And Pichler almost added the third goal – but Hradecky scratched his header from the corner (73′).

Leverkusen then increased the pressure, but KSV defended passionately and threw themselves into every ball that came towards the Weiner goal. Alonso’s team didn’t have more than two half-chances from Martin Terrier (79′) and Grimaldo (90′). After seven minutes of added time, referee Robert Hartmann whistled the game off – and the Kiel fan block, which was packed with almost 3,000 fans, literally exploded.
