At 37, Marianne Vos continues to collect world titles, even if they were stamps. In the sprint, the Dutch Lotte Kopecky beat her to claim her first rainbow in clay. Good for her 14th copy in 4 (!) disciplines. “Luckily my legs didn’t explode at the finish,” Vos laughs after her umpteenth triumph.

“Of course it remains very special,” winks Marianne Vos after her 14th world title since her first in 2006.

She has already collected 13 rainbow jerseys in track cycling, cyclo-cross and on the road. Now she is adding a gravel specimen to her impressive collection.

“Although I didn’t have the time to think about the other 13 today,” the Dutch woman shares. “What I did think about? Don’t do anything too crazy during the match, because Lotte made it tough enough.”

That is precisely why Kopecky was not the ideal fellow escapee in Leuven. “Because she is also very quick at the finish line. Although I did enjoy her company, especially with such an audience.”

Luckily my legs didn’t explode in the sprint.

Although enjoyment was relative.

“I was also concentrating on avoiding bad luck. Then it was important to reach the final and play it well.”

“Lotte was in the lead and when we passed the 200 meter sign, I started. Then I had to hope that my legs didn’t explode. Fortunately, they made it to the finish,” Vos concludes.

Number 14 was a fact, the first in gravel biking. Vos has been an indispensable presence at the top of cycling for 16 years.
