The death of the young Swiss woman, who died after a fall on the course of a junior event at the world championships, shocked the peloton.

Anger tinged with strong emotion. This Friday, October 4, a young professional cyclist expressed his feelings after the tragic death of his young Swiss colleague Muriel Furrer. The young woman, barely 18 years old, died Thursday, September 26, following a fall during the junior event of the Cycling Worlds in Zurich.

An investigation is underway and, according to initial information, Muriel Furrer violently left the road that day, and remained alone for very long minutes, without assistance, at the scene of the tragedy.

Also very young, 20 years old, the Italian Andrea Raccagni Noviero let his pain speak, on the social network Instagram. “A week has passed (since the death, Editor’s note) and apart from a few articles, no one talks about it anymore. […] Maybe this post won’t be as helpful as I would like, but at least it will give me the opportunity to apologize to Muriel and her family. Because like I said, it’s also my fault and that of all the other drivers who never spoke about obvious safety issues.”

The young runner here expresses his fears about the safety of runners. Some believe that ever higher performances and speeds are required of them, without the tracks and racing conditions being adapted.

“I feel guilty about it”

“It’s also our fault. If we got to this point, it’s because we don’t even make an effort to change things. Everyone knows what happened in Zurich a few years ago days I can’t say much more because the investigation is ongoing and I didn’t compete in this specific race, but I can speak to what I experienced from each athlete who ran the race. -watch like me put his life in danger on a descent that made NO sense of being there, and everyone knew it.”

He continues: “We are doing a sport that is already very dangerous and at the exact moment you decide to take part in a race you know what risks you are taking, but this is different. It just means that the people who take the risks decisions have absolutely no concern for our safety and that we ourselves have no respect for our lives.”

“We just accept it, but is that what we want? It’s certainly not Muriel’s family, to whom I send my deepest condolences, and at the same time I apologize, because I had the opportunity to speak and I didn’t do it before And I also want to apologize to you Muriel, because like any other 18 year old, you deserved to live your life to the fullest and not. I can’t lose her like this, and I feel guilty about it.”
