Cholera in Kasai: 35 deaths and more than 155 suspected cases reported in two health zones

The health zones of Mushenge and Dekese in the Kasai province were declared an epidemic during week 14 (April 1 to 7), by the governor of Kasai. They make a total of 155 suspected cases and 35 deaths, lethality (22.5%).

Faced with the outbreak of cases, on Sunday, May 5, the WHO provided the health authorities of Mushenge, in Kasai, with health supplies for treatment against cholera, financed by the central emergency response fund of (UNCRF) which aim to defeat the epidemic in these two health zones, in a rapid, effective and coordinated manner.

Kasai was declared an increase in cases estimated at 400.0% during week 14, compared to previous weeks of 2024, precisely in the Mushenge ZS.

The cumulative number of cholera cases reported since the start of the year until H14/2024 amounts to 12,578 cases and 201 deaths (fatality: 1.6%) distributed in 81 ZS in 13/26 provinces of the country. .

The number of cholera cases reported to WHO has remained high in recent years. In 2022, 472,697 cases and 2,349 deaths were reported to WHO in 44 countries. The discrepancy between these figures and the disease burden estimate is that many cases go unrecorded due to limitations in surveillance systems and fears of negative impacts on trade and tourism.
