« It’s green, it’s ugly and it’s useless “, joke the rural mayors. In recent years, flexible tanks or “fire tarpaulins” have been growing like mushrooms in the countryside. Their interest? Providing firefighters with local water points when the flow rates of drinking water networks prove insufficient to fight fires. Any home must – theoretically and depending on the departments – be located less than 400 m or 500 m from a regulatory water point. Otherwise, building permits may be refused by the State. And mayors may find themselves liable in the event of a disaster, due to failure to invest in this equipment.

Imposed by law as part of external fire protection (Deci), these flexible tanks and their earthworks can cost up to 20,000 euros, or even much more. One might as well say a fortune for villages made up of multiple hamlets. In Charente-Maritime…
