The guests of a hotel in the Flon district in the heart of Lausanne had to be evacuated during the night from Thursday to Friday due to a risk of explosion. The water heater’s automatic alarm was triggered and steam was observed around the unit when firefighters arrived. The situation was brought under control. There were no injuries.
The alarm was triggered shortly before 10 p.m. following a technical fault, police said in a statement on Friday. Firefighters from the City of Lausanne quickly went to the site and noted the release of water vapor after the water heater was overpressurized and threatened to explode, explains the municipal police.

A security perimeter was established in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, rue de la Vigie, and it was evacuated preventively. Around 80 people, customers and employees of the hotel, were able to find refuge in the neighboring fire station, where space was made available to them, it is specified.
The water heater was taken out of service by technicians from the Industrial Services of the City of Lausanne (SIL) and customers were able to gradually re-enter the establishment around 1:30 a.m. No injuries were reported, police noted. (jah/ats)
