Champions League: The full draw for the regular season

How does the regular season work?

Big news of the 2024-25 Champions League, the clubs are discovering the regular season this year. The latter takes the form of a single championship where the 36 competing teams are ranked. And as in domestic championships, such as Ligue 1 or the Premier League, the objective is obviously to finish as high as possible in the table.

Everything you need to know about the new Champions League format

Each team therefore has a total of 8 matches to play, over the period from September 17, 2024 to January 19, 2025. The points scoring system does not change from the usual competitions: 3 points will therefore be awarded in the event of victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 units per defeat. The matches will also be played in 90 minutes, without any extension.

In the event of a tie after the last day, the teams will be decided according to UEFA criteria.

How to qualify directly for the round of 16?

The accounts will be made on the evening of the 8th and final day of the championship, since they will make it possible to know the teams qualified for the final phase of the Champions League.

And the objective for everyone will be to reach the top 8 of the ranking, since the first 8 teams will be directly qualified for the round of 16. Added to this is the advantage of being a “top seed” and thus being assured of not facing other top seeds in the round of 16.

Note that the final day of the regular season will take the form of a multiplex during which the 16 matches will be played simultaneously, exclusively with CANAL+. Each goal or even each card could well shake up the list of directly qualified teams.

Which teams will be eliminated from the Champions League?

The teams ranked 9th to 24th will have a second chance: They will have to go through play-offs, a sort of round of 16. These two-way matches will be played on February 11-12 and 18-19, 2025.

The ranking of these play-offs will also be important since the teams ranked between 9th and 16th positions will have the advantage of playing their return match at home. Enough to ensure suspense at all levels.

On the other hand, the sanction is strict for teams ranked 25th and above: they will be eliminated from the Champions League. And from this edition, those eliminated will not be transferred to the Europa League.
