The death of these eight people in a fire caused by a gas explosion in a restaurant in Beirut (Lebanon) was confirmed by the Minister of the Interior, Bassam Mawlawi.

Fire brought under control by firefighters

L’blast of gas that occurred in a restaurant in Beirut Lebanon led to the death of at least eight people this Tuesday, April 30, according to the country’s authorities. The incident, caused by a gas leak, sparked a fire which was quickly brought under control by firefighters. “Eight victims died of asphyxiation inside the restaurant”, indicated the official press agency (Ani) quoting the Beirut firefighters. Firefighters managed to put out a fire in a small restaurant in the capital after“a gas leak caused an explosion in the restaurant”added Ani on the remarks relayed by BFMTV.

Failure to comply with public safety standards

The Minister of the Interior, Bassam Mawlawi, arrived on site and confirmed to the press the death of at least eight people “by asphyxiation”. For his part, MP Ibrahim Mneimneh, who visited the scene, stressed that this accident highlighted the non-compliance with public safety standards in this place. This tragedy occurs in a context where the economy of Lebanon has been in crisis since the end of 2019. The situation accentuates the problems of public control in different sectors.
