What to do if your phone gets wet?

A phone that falls into the water is a disaster! Fortunately, there are a few “saving measures” to practice in order to hope to find a functional device after a wet experience. It’s about rice, but not only.

Is your smartphone waterproof?

This may seem trivial, but it is the first question to ask yourself when your phone or smartphone has fallen into water. In recent years, smartphone manufacturers have become aware of the risk of their devices falling into water with the behavior of users in the kitchen, the bathroom, by the pool or in the rain.

All, and in particular Apple with his iPhone, have therefore embarked on an innovation process to make their smartphones waterproof. This is also indicated on the technical sheet via the waterproof index (IP52, IP64, IP67, IP68, etc.). Unless you opt for an entry-level model, there is a high probability that your smartphone will withstand an accidental passage in water without suffering damage. All you have to do is wait until the device is dry to regain all its functionality.

What are the repairs for a phone dropped in water?

If your phone is not waterproof (or not waterproof enough), it is possible to undertake minor repairs at home. Once the phone has been recovered and taking care not to shake it in all directions (at the risk of causing water to circulate inside), it is therefore recommended:

  • To turn off the smartphone;
  • Gently dry all components that can be easily removed (SIM card, SD card, battery, etc.) using absorbent paper, for several hours, or even overnight;
  • Replace its components and try to turn the device back on.

If everything works, take care to make a backup of your data to prevent a possible failure. If your phone fell into the water and no longer works, even after recharging the battery, then you will have to opt for another solution.

How to dry a smartphone that has fallen into water?

The absorbent paper technique is the basic rule for drying a smartphone that has fallen into water. That of rice constitutes another. Contrary to some popular belief, immersing your smartphone in a bowl of raw rice to dry it actually turns out to be an effective method. Provided you ensure that no grain gets stuck in the device, rice can in fact absorb moisture from a smartphone that has fallen into swimming pool water, a sink, etc. The hairdryer technique, on the other hand, has a higher risk of damaging the device.

What should I do if my phone fell into the water and no longer works?

If, despite your best efforts, your phone no longer works, you have two options to choose from:

  • Take your device to an approved repairer;
  • Replace your smartphone.

Please note that most insurance policies exclude coverage for repairs in the event of a smartphone falling into water. The best solution is therefore to be vigilant and use your phone at a reasonable distance from a water point.
