A man of Russian nationality, Mr. Mataeb, born December 24, 1989, was placed in police custody in the for acts of murder by an organized gang. The individual, who was released from the Administrative Detention Center (CRA) in Nîmes on September 18, 2024, is suspected of having committed a homicide in La Seyne-sur-Mer, in the Var, on September 25, 2024, less than a week after his release.

The victim’s partially burned body was found in a burned apartment, leading to the suspect’s arrest. Mr. Mataeb was placed in administrative detention after a conviction for drug trafficking in January 2023 by the judicial court. A three-year ban from the national territory (ITN) was then issued against him.

Mataeb was incarcerated before being transferred to the CRA in Nîmes on June 20, 2024. His passport, which had been confiscated from him, was returned to him upon his release after 90 days of detention, the legal maximum duration in . The alleged murder, occurring a few days after his release, raises questions about the conditions of surveillance and control of people released after administrative detention. The authorities have not yet made any additional comments on this case currently under investigation.
