‘No to Sinner’s acquittal’: Wada appeals and asks for a 1-2 year ban – Tennis

And so the Clostebol affair is not yet over, as the most optimistic people on websites and social media believed. While Jannik Sinner is on the field against Safiullin in Beijing, the news arrived, announced by Wada, that Wada itself, the world anti-doping agency, has appealed to the CAS against the acquittal of the no. 1 in the world, underlining that he does not believe the “finding of absence of guilt” to be correct and asking for a ban of one to two years for Jannik.

The doping case involving the South Tyrolean tennis player, acquitted by Itia (International Tennis Integrity Agency) began when it became known, after the Games in which Sinner had not taken part due to tonsillitis, that Sinner himself had tested positive on March 10, during the Indian Wells tournament.

Traces of the clostebol metabolite, i.e. what remains after the prohibited substance has been metabolised in the body but not yet completely expelled, also emerged in a second check carried out outside the tournament eight days later.

In both cases Sinner had successfully appealed against the provisional suspension that is triggered in these situations and was thus able to continue playing. The world number 1 had explained that he came into contact with clostebol due to contamination. The substance is in fact contained in Trofodermin, an over-the-counter drug in Italy used to treat a small wound of his then physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who had performed massages and other treatments on Sinner in those days, who then fired him after the case has come to light. As for the no. 1 in the world, on several occasions, even after winning the US Open, had expressed his bitterness by revealing that he had been influenced by the affair and had overcome it “with the help of those who have always been close to me”.
