At least four people died in two fires which broke out overnight from Monday to Tuesday in two separate buildings in Paris, we learned from police sources and the Paris prosecutor’s office.

According to initial information, the victims were found shortly before 8 a.m. in an attic apartment on the 7th floor of a building located on Boulevard des Italians, in the 2nd arrondissement, in the center of the capital.

According to our colleagues at Parisian, the fire broke out shortly after 4 a.m. The victims “were unable to get out through the window because of the anti-intrusion bars to prevent burglaries coming from the roof,” district mayor Ariel Weil told AFP. “The stairwell leading to this room located on the top floor of the building was on fire.”, he also indicated, referring to a “very particular and difficult” intervention.

Thanks to the @PompiersParis for their nocturnal intervention against a fire after a gas leak in an old building at the start of Bd des Italians, where traffic will soon resume (avoid the area). Despite the rapid intervention, victims are unfortunately to be deplored. pic.twitter.com/4eDTNCXBjj

“Around ten other people housed on the same floor were saved by firefighters who intervened through the roof,” added the councilor. A slightly injured person was evacuated to hospital. Two firefighters were also injured during the intervention. According to Ariel Weil and the police Source, the possibility of a gas leak causing the fire is being considered.

Several fire trucks were still on site shortly before 11 a.m. and a command post was set up, noted an AFP journalist. An investigation was opened and entrusted at this stage to the Paris Center police station, indicated the prosecution.

A second fire in the 15th arrondissement

Furthermore, the Paris prosecutor’s office added that it had been notified of another fatal fire that occurred in the 15th arrondissement, in the southwest of the capital.

“A person aged around sixty was found dead, another is in absolute emergency and two are in relative emergency,” detailed the prosecution. The deceased person is a woman, according to another police Source, who specifies that “the fire appears to have started” in her home.

An investigation into the causes of death and injuries was entrusted to the 15th arrondissement police station.
