Israel claims to have “eliminated” Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a strike in Beirut

Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut was hit by an Israeli attack this Friday, September 27. According to Israeli media, the operation directly targeted Hassan Nasrallah. A source close to Hezbollah affirmed that the leader of the movement, which continues to threaten Israel with rocket attacks on the north of the country, was “safe and sound”. However, this Saturday, September 28, the Israeli army announced that it had “eliminated” the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, during a strike in Beirut.

“Hassan Nasrallah is dead,” Israeli army spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said in a message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter). The news was confirmed by another Israeli army spokesperson, Captain David Avraham, who told AFP that the Hezbollah leader had indeed been “eliminated”.

Hassan Nasrallah, head of Hezbollah since 1992, was an emblematic figure of the Lebanese Islamist movement, which has constantly confronted Israel in recent decades. He had lived in hiding for years to escape Israeli strikes, while continuing to lead the organization which today numbers around 100,000 fighters. Nasrallah had gained regional fame for his role in resistance against Israel, notably during the 2006 war between Hezbollah and the IDF.

The “contact is lost” with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a source close to the movement told AFP on Saturday, without confirming his death announced by Israel. “Contact with Hassan Nasrallah has been lost since Friday evening”said this source on condition of anonymity, while Israel claimed to have killed the leader of Hezbollah in a massive strike Friday on the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The announced death of Nasrallah comes in a context of high tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with regular exchanges of fire between the two camps and an intensification of Israeli military operations against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. This elimination, if confirmed, could have significant repercussions in Lebanon and throughout the region.

The chief of staff of the Israeli army, General Herzi Halevi, promised on Saturday to” reach “ anyone threatening Israel, shortly after the army announced the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli strike on Friday in Beirut. “We have not exhausted all the means at our disposal. The message is simple: whoever threatens the citizens of Israel, we will know how to get to them.”General Halevi said in a statement.
