The two girls – who live in a shelter – had been missing since Saturday 21 September in Luxembourg, police said in a statement. They were found in Germany and repatriated to their home.

Anna and Yuliaa are safe and sound. After a family visit on Saturday 21 September, the two girls, 7-year-old twins, had not been returned to the children’s home in south-west Luxembourg where they live, the local police said in a statement. An appeal for witnesses was then launched to try to find the two sisters as quickly as possible. On Monday evening, the girls were found in good health in Trier, Germany, the Luxembourg prosecutor’s office confirmed on Tuesday morning.

“They were picked up for an excursion around noon by family members with visiting rights, but were not taken home.”the police had specified in the search notice which had been quickly issued.

Thousands of children disappear every year in Europe

A photo of the two girls accompanied the appeal for witnesses, which details their physical characteristics and the clothes they were wearing on the day they disappeared. Anna and Yuliaa were dressed the same way on Saturday: they wore denim pants, a dark blue sweater with a cartoon character on it and black shoes. Both girls are Caucasian. They have medium-length brown hair and dark eyes.

In Europe, thousands of children go missing every year, whether because they ran away, were abducted from their parents or disappeared for other reasons. Since they are likely to move across borders, cooperation between countries on the continent is necessary. Last November, a symposium on the theme of missing children in Europe was held in in order to improve cooperation between states.
